Iditarod Trail Committee: organizer of the sled dog race in Alaska
The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization responsible for organizing the Iditarod, a sled dog race held in Alaska. The organization manages both the sporting side and the broadcast of the event, as well as educational programs and dog care initiatives.
The race and its live coverage
The competition is built around a route with checkpoints and a standings system that fans can follow through the Race Center. The next edition is announced for March 6, 2027. The site offers a live tracking dashboard that combines live streaming, GPS, and chat, plus a standalone GPS map and a mobile version of the dashboard.
Coverage includes live broadcasts, featured videos, documentaries, and content from the Insider 2.0 platform. The race archive contains records from previous editions, musher profiles, standings, and route maps.
Access levels and subscriptions
Access to content is organized into three levels. The Visitor level allows users to view standings, ten-second video previews, and free live broadcasts. The Insider Free level, after creating an account, adds access to some full video content with ads, email alerts for one favorite musher, and access to some articles. The paid Insider level includes all the above features plus full video content, multi-camera trail live streams, all live broadcasts, exclusive musher and trail videos, the GPS tracker, and email alerts for five favorite mushers, as well as access to documentaries.
The organization's store sells Insider subscriptions, classroom and school subscriptions, gift cards, digital downloads, and memberships.
Educational programs
Iditarod EDU is the organization's educational program, with resources for teachers and students. It includes the Teacher on the Trail role, articles, a newsletter, and the IditaRead program, with registration and recommended reading. The materials cover areas such as math, science, social studies, language arts, technology, the arts, and character education, as well as tools and tips for the classroom. The Zuma's K9 Journalists program features a team of dog journalists, including Sanka W. Dog, Gypsy, Zuma, and Libby Littles, who publish content for students. Resources such as puzzles, games, coloring activities, quizzes, and conferences for teachers are also offered.
Dog care
The organization maintains a section dedicated to dog care that covers a veterinary center, nutrition, genetics, general health, and training and conditioning of sled dogs.
Editorial content and race resources
The site publishes blogs, the Iditarod podcast, a photo gallery, and a weather center. The history section covers the history of the race, the history of the trail, mushing terminology, and trivia and facts. Special awards and qualifying races for mushers are also documented.
Participation, events, and organizational structure
The organization offers ways to get involved such as volunteering, membership, sponsorship, and donations.
