About Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

The DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship supports doctoral research using high-performance computing to address scientific and engineering problems. Applications for the 2027–28 incoming cohort are due Thursday, January 7, 2027. Fields may include physics, engineering, life sciences, mathematics, computer science, and other areas using HPC; applicants must explain how their work fits one of the two tracks.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents planning full-time, uninterrupted Ph.D. study at an accredited U.S. university. Eligible groups include undergraduate seniors, first-year graduate students, and people entering a doctoral program; students who have completed more than one year of Ph.D. work are ineligible. International students on F-1 status do not meet the citizenship or permanent-residency requirement.

The program lists a $45,000 annual stipend, payment of tuition and required fees, a $1,000 professional-development allowance, and support renewable for up to four years subject to review. Fellows complete a 12-week practicum at a Department of Energy laboratory or site. The program requires interdisciplinary coursework and limits teaching obligations to protect research time.

The application requires official transcripts from each institution, three references, a program-of-study plan reviewed with a doctoral adviser, and timely submission of every component. Letters and transcripts are also due January 7; late supporting materials can leave the file incomplete. Determine whether your research belongs in Science & Engineering or Math/Computer Science and use the official portal to prepare confidential documents early.
