About Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival

Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival: chamber music in Northeast Florida

The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival (AICMF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based on Amelia Island, Florida, founded in 2001 by Christopher Rex, then principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a regular visitor to the island. Since its creation, the festival has grown from a local idea into a nationally recognized chamber music event, with concerts spanning classical masterpieces, contemporary voices, and collaborations that cross genres.

A format that leaves traditional halls behind

Rather than limiting itself to conventional theaters or concert halls, the festival programs performances in unique Amelia Island spaces: churches, courthouses, hotels, wedding venues, forts, and even local parks. These settings aim to create intimate and unique experiences that reflect the character of the island. The concert series runs from January through June, with a season that in its 26th edition (2026-2027) includes 19 announced events.

Featured artists and ensembles

Throughout its seasons, the festival has presented performers such as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Hilary Hahn, Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell, Chick Corea, Béla Fleck, Chris Thile, Emanuel Ax, Wynton Marsalis, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Ricky Skaggs, and Renée Fleming, among others. The Dover Quartet has been the festival's first resident quartet, reflecting the organization's commitment to artistic excellence and long-term relationships.

The season 26 lineup includes concerts such as Sounds of the Season featuring Nicole Zuraitis, A New Year's Celebration, the Anderson and Roe piano duo, the Dover Quartet, an evening with Audra McDonald, Johannes Moser and Marc-André Hamelin, Balsam Range, Curtis on Tour featuring Nicholas Canellakis, Voice and the Violin featuring Joshua Bell, Larisa Martínez and Peter Dugan, the Marasco Young Artists' Concert, Beethoven & Beer, and the Festival Finale with the American String Quartet and Beth Newdome Fellows. It also includes a Blue Danube Tauck River Cruise scheduled from July 22 to August 2, 2027.

Education and community access

Music education and community engagement have been central since the founding. The festival runs the Christopher Rex String Seminar, masterclasses, school performances, free family programming, outreach concerts, and opportunities for young musicians. These initiatives aim to bring music to audiences of all ages and support the next generation of artists. Several of the season 26 masterclasses are free to attend.

Funding and sustainability

Ticket sales account for only about 25% of the festival's annual budget. The rest is raised through donations, sponsorships, and grants from individuals and organizations, as well as the work of a volunteer corps. The organization has the tax identification number EIN 59-3744948.

Accessibility

The festival states its commitment to complying with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request materials in accessible format, sign language interpreters, or other accommodations, the organization asks that you contact them at least 10 days in advance via the email or phone number provided.
