About City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs — Bernalillo County
The Department of Senior Affairs’ Senior Information & Assistance line is the most useful starting point for families in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. A representative helps identify services based on age, address, and need: meals, transportation, activities, home assessment, and caregiver support. Call 505-764-6400; listed hours are Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with TTY at 1-800-659-8331.
Age requirements vary by program. Many city activities welcome adults starting at age 50, while Older Americans Act services—including transportation, home-delivered meals, and case management—start at 60. For case management, coordinators visit the home to assess needs and connect residents with meals, homemaker help, respite, adult day services, or medication management. Screening determines eligibility; an inquiry is not automatic approval.
City centers are meal and activity hubs, not just offices. The network includes six senior centers and multigenerational centers with lunch, exercise, classes, and social support. Lunch is offered at no cost to adults age 60 and older, with a suggested contribution; adults 50 to 59 may pay a reduced rate. Some sites request reservations the previous day. The official page lists sites and phone numbers; confirm the day’s menu and capacity.
For someone unable to leave home alone, the city offers screening for home-delivered meals and curb-to-curb transportation by reservation, with medical appointments prioritized and accessible vehicles available. Distance and advance notice vary by trip type; some rides require seven days’ notice, while shared errand trips are booked three days ahead. Ask about return trips, companions, and the exact service area before scheduling an appointment.
The city directory lists center addresses, but the central phone line helps callers reach the right program. Have the address, age, mobility needs, income when relevant, health coverage, and daily tasks that have become difficult ready. Ask what paperwork is needed, how long screening may take, and whether any contribution applies before traveling or accepting a service.
