About Alamo Inn B&B, Gear and Tours

Alamo Inn B&B, Gear and Tours: Historic Lodging and Birding in the Rio Grande Valley

Alamo Inn B&B, Gear and Tours is a bed & breakfast located at 801 Main Street, on the central square of Alamo, Texas. It opened its doors in November 1999 and has since been directly managed by Keith Hackland and Audrey Jones. The main building, former headquarters of the Alamo Land and Sugar Company, dates back to 1919, when the city of Alamo was just beginning to establish itself. The Garden Suites, located at the east end of the square, date back to the 1970s and are surrounded by gardens of native shrubs and trees that attract birds and butterflies.

Accommodation: 22 Restored Rooms and Suites

The property has 22 rooms and suites distributed between the historic 1919 building and the 1970s Garden Suites. All are individually furnished, have their own air conditioning, private bathroom, full linens, and kitchenette or full kitchen. Bed sizes vary and shampoo, conditioner, soap, and hair dryer are provided. Due to the historic nature of the buildings, the rooms and suites are smoke-free and perfume-free. There are no elevators, but there are ground-floor rooms, some adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Breakfast and Included Services

The rate includes a simple cold breakfast and lunch fixings, available 24/7. For groups and tours arranged in advance, a special rate is offered that includes a hot breakfast buffet with flexible timing and options for meat and vegetarian diets. The property's staff provides southern, border, self-serve hospitality.

Nearby destinations include Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, a 12-minute drive away, and Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, on the coast 55 minutes away. The annual RGV Birding Festival is held at the Harlingen Convention Center, 25 minutes away. The region has thirteen birding hotspots with visitor amenities and others without, all between 10 and 35 minutes away, and all floodplain hotspots are accessible within 90 minutes.

Guardian, the Alamo Inn Goose

The property is home to Guardian, a Chinese farmyard goose that has become a symbol of the lodging and appeared in the Netflix documentary "Birders." The goose oversees the feeding of the wild birds that come to the gardens.
