About Theatre Royal Windsor
Historic theatre next to Windsor Castle
Theatre Royal Windsor is a theatre located in the centre of Windsor, a short distance from the castle. It presents itself as the only unsubsidised producing theatre operating all year round in the United Kingdom, with a history that the institution itself dates back more than 200 years. Its activity combines hosting national and international companies with its own productions of shows that subsequently embark on tours around the country.
Programme: drama, comedy, musicals and opera
Throughout the year the theatre programmes drama, comedy, musicals, opera and family shows. The listings published at the time of analysis included the following titles:
- The Anastasia File, by Royce Ryton, with Jenny Seagrove and Simon Shepherd, as part of The Theatre Royal Windsor Season on tour (30 September to 3 October 2026).
- Wilko: Love & Death 'N' Rock & Roll, a play with live music coming from the Leicester Square Theatre in London's West End and, before that, from the Southwark Playhouse, following its premiere at the Queen's Theatre Hornchurch in 2024 (6 to 10 October 2026).
- The Mousetrap, by Agatha Christie, premiered in 1952 and on tour for its 75th anniversary (12 to 17 October 2026).
- The Turn Of The Screw, in a new stage adaptation by Olivier Award-winning playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (20 to 24 October 2026).
- The Snow Queen, a ballet by Ballet Theatre UK based on the tale by Hans Christian Andersen (27 to 31 October 2026).
Own productions and tours
As well as hosting shows from other companies, the theatre produces and premieres its own productions and launches tours around the United Kingdom. The institution notes that some of its first productions of new work have subsequently transferred to the West End. Its repertoire ranges from classic drama to more than 80 continuous years of traditional pantomime.
