About Cornwall Residential Landlords Association (CRLA)

Cornwall Residential Landlords Association: representation of landlords in Cornwall

The Cornwall Residential Landlords Association (CRLA) is an association created in 1993 to represent, assist and inform landlords with properties in the county of Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. In December 2004 it was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee, a British legal form that does not distribute profits among its members.

The organisation brings together professional landlords with properties throughout the county, who share knowledge and experience through the association. Its activity is structured around institutional representation, practical information and advice for its members.

Representation before administrations and sector bodies

Representatives of the association take part in meetings with Cornwall Council in all areas where the private rental sector is discussed, as well as with other relevant local organisations. This liaison work allows the position of residential landlords to be conveyed to the administrations that regulate the activity.

Regular meetings and ongoing training

The CRLA holds general meetings every two months in the Truro area, open to both members and non-members. These gatherings allow attendees to exchange views and raise their problems, and feature guest speakers who keep participants up to date on relevant developments in the residential rental business. Those unable to attend in person have the option of following the meetings via Zoom.

In addition, the association publishes a monthly newsletter with information on legislation, regulation and other developments affecting the activity, along with regular case law updates.

Resources and documentation for members

The members' area of the website brings together downloadable forms and documentation in PDF (Adobe Acrobat/Reader) and DOC (Microsoft Office/Word) formats. Among the available materials are information sheets and guides on managing anti-social behaviour, managing rent arrears, end of the tenancy, voluntary surrender of tenancy by tenant, notice to quit, ending a lodger agreement, serving notices, court action needed and using the bailiffs. Downloadable sample letters are also offered.

The platform includes tools for advertising available properties, references for potential new tenants and options to renew or cancel the subscription. Registered members access restricted content via a login form.

Intermediation services and member benefits

The association offers its members free lettings advice through its office and free access to fire safety services. It also manages a trade directory in which members can advertise, and maintains sections for properties to rent or for sale, with a specific form for those looking for a rental property whose details are only visible to logged-in members.

The CRLA acts as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Alan Boswell Insurance Brokers Ltd (FRN 301081).

Institutional and regulatory information

The website compiles consultations from local and central government, government documents of interest to landlords, as well as information on legislation and regulation from local and central government. It also keeps an archive of the association's newsletters and presentations from its meetings.

Among the news highlighted by the association are updates on right to rent checks, the Valuation Office rent increase service, the registration of rental properties under the new name of the PRS database, and a member benefit related to fully funded solar PV and battery storage.
