Trentham Estate
Staffordshire estate with Italian Gardens, a lake, walks, adventure play, Shopping Village, and seasonal activities.
About Trentham Estate
Trentham Estate combines gardens, a lake, woodland, and an outdoor shopping area on a 725-acre Staffordshire estate. Its offering allows visitors to choose among exploring plantings, walking beside the water, spending time at children’s play areas, or browsing shops. The complex’s scale explains why gardens, stores, restaurants, and activities maintain distinct access arrangements and schedules.
The Italian Gardens and Trentham Lake form the landscape’s core. The gardens’ recent history includes the 2004 restoration led by Tom Stuart-Smith and design work by Piet Oudolf, Nigel Dunnett, and David Austin Roses. The Next Chapter revisits the Italian Gardens’ design with new planting; work beside the lake and the David Austin rose border provide other reference points. Visitors encounter a combination of historic structure and contemporary planting.
Lakeside routes pass through meadows and woodland, while Rivers of Grass and the Floral Labyrinth provide different ways to experience the garden. Lakeside Café overlooks the water and the Tearooms overlook the Italian Gardens. Dogs can enter the gardens and lakeside walks on short, two-meter leashes. The landscape visit therefore includes places to pause and specific conditions for travelers with pets.
The adventure area offers climbing, slides, balance activities, zip lines, and disc golf. The Barefoot Walk adds a sensory route walked without shoes; some activities, including this walk, the maze, and the boat, are seasonal and limited in winter. October 2026 programming includes Find the Flock, with twelve Shaun the Sheep sculptures in the gardens through November 1, alongside fungi walks and Halloween activities.
Shopping Village brings stores and dining venues together in an outdoor setting with free parking. The garden center and Trentham shop extend plant and gift shopping. Monkey Forest appears as another attraction within the complex, with its own visiting channel. A garden ticket should be distinguished from bookings for events and other estate experiences.
Garden hours change during the fall and distinguish members’ access from day-ticket admission. Shops and restaurants follow their own schedules. Trentham provides enough options to organize a visit around particular interests: garden design, walks, outdoor play, shopping, or a scheduled activity, with the lake and plantings linking the landscape together.
