Carbon brushes: manufacturing and advice

Solent Tools has a large range of brushes for AC motors (over 800 types) and a smaller selection for DC motors. It also manufactures bespoke carbon brushes in any quantity. To identify the correct brush, the company recommends searching by the model number of the tool; if it does not appear, it suggests measuring a brush with a micrometer or vernier calliper and sending an image with the dimensions, or posting an original brush so they can find a replacement pair. In the case of DC motors, it is necessary to send an original brush and, if possible, estimate the required length or measure from the top of the brush holder to the commutator, as the grade of the brush must be correct among many types, compounds and resistances. The approximate cost indicated on the website for most of its range is £10 to £15 per pair, including VAT and delivery; some models may cost more and larger quantity orders can be less expensive.

Brands and compatibility

The company insists that its spare parts are compatible with the main brands in the sector. The list of brands mentioned includes both traditional manufacturer brands and own brands of large retailers. The site also mentions that some brands have changed owner or name, such as Challenge and Challenge Xtreme, linked to Argos. Solent Tools presents itself as an option for those looking for hard-to-find parts for old or discontinued tools.

Shipping, returns and other services

The website includes informative sections on shipping options, returns, terms and conditions and privacy policy. It also offers a repair service and the possibility of posting a sample of the part for identification.
