MJL Decorating Services: hand-painted kitchens in Hampshire

MJL Decorating Services is a painting and decorating company based in Bursledon, Southampton, specialising in transforming kitchens through hand-painting. Its founder, Matt Lemon, has over 40 years of experience in the trade, trained through a four-year apprenticeship and qualified with City & Guilds in Painting and Decorating at both Craft and Advanced level.

The company works across Hampshire and focuses on bringing tired kitchens back to life without the need to replace the units, applying a hand-finished look with professional brushes and rollers.

Hand-painting cabinets and furniture

The main service consists of transforming existing kitchen cabinets through hand-applied paint. The process includes preparation, priming and painting of every surface to achieve a durable, characterful finish, with the aim of making the kitchen look new without replacing the units. The company states that it does not use spray guns, which according to its presentation provides greater depth and durability compared with factory finishes.

In addition to kitchens, the firm also carries out general painting and decorating work, as well as wallpapering.

Full surface preparation and repair

Preparation is presented as an essential phase of the work. The team cleans, sands and repairs doors, frames and trim to create a suitable base before painting. This includes filling hairline cracks and replacing worn hinges, among other details that contribute to the final result.

Colour consultation and design support

The company offers a colour consultation service to help clients choose shades that suit their style, lighting and home décor. The advice ranges from timeless neutrals to bold modern tones or heritage-style palettes.

Kitchen renovation without replacing the units

MJL Decorating Services' approach seeks to offer the look of a new kitchen without the costs, waste or disruption of a full refit. The company works efficiently and cleanly, minimising interruptions, and paints the doors and drawer fronts on site, along with the frames, plinths and trim, to guarantee a uniform finish. Existing handles can be reused or replaced and repositioned if the client wishes.
