Street Cranexpress is a British company based in Sheffield dedicated to the maintenance, repair and modernisation of overhead cranes. With half a century of activity, it presents itself as a national overhead crane service provider and serves organisations of any size, including companies in the manufacturing, utilities, defence and aerospace sectors.

The company describes itself as a British family-owned business headquartered in Sheffield with a team of engineers distributed throughout the country, available 24 hours to attend breakdowns. Its offering is supported by a supply chain developed over 50 years and facilities that include offices, a workshop and a stockholding warehouse.

Overhead crane services

The service catalogue covers overhead crane maintenance, repairs, breakdown support, upgrades and consultancy. The company offers service agreements and an automated reporting system called XpressView. It also provides 24-hour breakdown support and carries out overhead crane safety assessments, consultancy on legislative compliance and operational efficiency, and working period assessment.

Technical services include wireless crack detection, overhead crane installation, light cranes and jib cranes, and inspection of lifting equipment and accessories. The company also markets overhead crane spare parts, electric chain hoists and wire rope hoists, radio controls and components for lifting equipment.

Training and academy

Through SCE Academy, Street Cranexpress provides training for electric overhead crane operators, slinger signallers and crane supervisors. The company notes that many of its engineers come from this specialised programme and start as apprentices, which allows it to have professionals trained in its own working methods.

Spare parts and distribution

Street Cranexpress presents itself as the only authorised distributor of genuine Street Crane Co parts in the UK. It maintains a large stockholding warehouse and a supply chain that allows it to offer spare parts for lifting equipment, with technical advice and fast delivery times. Products marketed include hoists, radio controls, light cranes and jib cranes, and come with a 12-month warranty as standard.

History: from CraneXpress to the SCE group

The company's history dates back to 1972, when Keith Eastwood launched CraneXpress for the maintenance and repair of cranes of all makes and models. In 1985 it expanded its offering with the purchase of Crane & Hoist Ltd, a supplier of hoists, jib cranes, gantries, slings and other material handling equipment. Two years later, in 1987, the group diversified with the acquisition of electrical distributor Burnand Components, which later became Bxh Ltd, with branches in Sheffield, Scunthorpe and Hull.

In 1990, Burnand acquired XH Electric, a similar electrical distributor based in Hull, and changed its name to Burnand XH; in 1992 a new branch was added in Scunthorpe. In 1997 Street CraneXpress, Crane & Hoist and Intertotal merged, the latter becoming SCX Special Projects. In 2006 SCX Group was created as the holding company for Street CraneXpress and Burnand XH. In 2011, Street CraneXpress split into two companies: Street CraneXpress continued with overhead crane services and SCX Special Projects focused on more complex engineering solutions. In 2016 the new head office opened on Tyler Street, with expanded workshop and office space, which became the head office of the SCE group. In 2020, the departure of SCX Special Projects from the group led to the creation of SCE Group, with Street Cranexpress and bxh as members.
