History of Kenegie Manor

The manor house that gives the park its name has over 500 years of history. It was first owned by the Tripconey family, until they became involved in the Cornish rebellion and the house was confiscated by the Crown. It then passed to the Harris family, who flourished under the reign of Elizabeth I; the house was expanded and the family was appointed Lieutenants of Cornwall by Sir Walter Raleigh, with responsibility for defending St Michael's Mount. Later, Harris was convicted for Royalist activities by Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentary forces. The last male member of the Harris family died in 1775 and the estate passed to William Arundell, who changed his name to Harris. In 1884, William Arundell's grandson sold Kenegie Manor to a London surgeon who restored the property. In 1886, due to his failing health, it passed into the hands of the Bolitho family, who had made their fortune in the heyday of Cornwall's tin and copper mining.
