About BELL Lighting

BELL Lighting, British lighting manufacturer since 1920

BELL Lighting is part of the BELL group and presents itself as a manufacturer and supplier of light sources and luminaires for the electrical wholesale sector. The company was founded in 1920 by E. R. Grote under the name British Electric Lamp Limited, with an incandescent lamp factory in Wimbledon (London) specialising in decorative light sources. The company remains family-owned and managed.

Its current catalogue covers a broad spectrum of lighting solutions: battens, bulkheads, domestic lighting, external, downlights, emergency, floodlights, high bays, lamps, linears, panels, retrofit solutions, standalone sensors, street lights and wallpacks, among others. The company also markets a range of smart lighting that includes sensors under the Foxbridge brand and Casambi-compatible products.

Specialisation in sports lighting and lighting design

BELL Lighting has a specific portfolio of products for sports lighting and offers a complementary lighting design service. This service, provided by trained and experienced design engineers, aims to ensure that each project achieves the correct lighting levels and complies with current regulations. The company offers it free of charge to the client.

Documented cases include the lighting upgrade of the indoor tennis facilities at Newlands Lawn Tennis Club, with Skyline Padel LED fittings; the installation of Skyline Padel wattage switchable floodlights on six double courts and one single court at Padel 54; the refurbishment of The Flaxworks complex at Cleator Mills (Cumbria); the lighting of Birmingham Central Mosque, the second purpose-built mosque in the United Kingdom and opened in the early 1970s; and a project at the facilities of the Irish transport company Mulgrew Haulage, founded in 1973.

Featured product: the Apex LED Batten range

The company has launched the Apex range, consisting of three LED battens with switchable colour temperature and wattage, providing flexibility across different applications. The series supports universal plug-in accessories, such as emergency modules, microwave sensors and PIR detectors, as well as a Casambi smart dimming option.

BELL Lighting tests all its products at its BELL House facilities to verify that they meet its quality standards. The company offers next-day delivery for orders placed before 16:00, including those placed by email and online. Its national distribution centre in Normanton (West Yorkshire) has 6,588 pallet locations, more than 2,100 sellable references and the capacity to dispatch 300 orders per day.

Industrial history and expansion

After the founding of the Wimbledon factory in 1920, the company went through difficult years in the 1940s, when its machinery was repurposed to produce military components. In the 1960s it expanded its plant to increase capacity and reached production of more than ten million units per year. In 1980 it established a distribution centre in West Yorkshire to facilitate next-day national delivery in the UK and Southern Ireland. In 2012 it opened a new distribution centre in Normanton, with on-site quality control facilities to carry out safety and life testing in accordance with EU safety and performance standards. In 2023 it moved its operations to BELL House, its new national distribution centre.

Sustainability

The company achieved carbon neutrality in 2023 and revalidated it in 2024. That same year it added the sustainable modular downlight Firestay Geo® to its catalogue, aimed at the circular economy, which won a Build Back Better Green Award and the Lighting Product of the Year and Smart Buildings/Sustainability Product of the Year awards at the Electrical Contracting News Awards. In June 2025 it installed solar panels at its national distribution centre to reduce its energy consumption.
