Henchman, ladders and platforms for working at height on uneven terrain

Henchman Ltd is a British company dedicated to the design and manufacture of ladders and working-at-height platforms specifically designed for uneven or soft surfaces. The firm presents itself as a specialist in this type of equipment and traces its origin to 1994, when the father-and-son team Mike and Tom Kitching launched the first model at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The starting point was a minor accident while cutting a hedge from a conventional ladder and the realisation that no suitable product existed at the time for uneven ground.

Tripod ladders: the core of the range

The main range is tripod ladders, available in several configurations: with rear adjustable leg, fully adjustable and a fully adjustable PRO version. The company states that its tripod ladder is the only one on the market with BS EN131 certification and that the PRO model is fully certified to that standard. The range also includes specific spare parts and accessories for these ladders.

According to the website information, the Henchman tripod ladder was ranked as the best garden buy of 2026 in independent testing by Which?, specifically the 2.4 m (8 ft) fully adjustable and PRO models. The firm highlights its lightness and stability for pruning trees and hedges at height.

Platforms and complementary equipment

Alongside the ladders, Henchman sells a range of adjustable four-legged platforms, including the All Terrain Telescopic Platform (ATTP) and the Hi-Step platforms, with their corresponding spare parts. The range is completed with garden equipment and accessories:

• Henchman lifting harness, designed to support the weight of heavy garden tools when pruning hedges, trees and grass.
• Wheelbarrows that, according to the company, allow transporting up to four times more material than a standard wheelbarrow, with their spare parts and accessories.
• Gardening tools and accessories, as well as gift cards.

Certifications and regulatory framework

The company declares that its ladders and platforms hold the British Kitemark certification and that it complies with the General Product Safety Regulations and the UK Work at Height Regulations. The BS EN131 certification is expressly mentioned for the fully adjustable PRO tripod ladder.

Customers and presence

Henchman states that its ladders and platforms are used by more than 50,000 homeowners and organisations, including the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), several royal households, the National Trust, local councils and landscape gardeners across the country. The company presents itself as the leading specialist in platform ladders in the UK and Europe, a claim that corresponds to its own description.

Sales, shipping and warranty

The shop operates in pounds sterling and offers free delivery and returns to mainland UK, with surcharges indicated for the Scottish Highlands (£30) and the Isle of Wight (£15). Products come with a five-year warranty and a 14-day return period. The company also has an EU store and a trade channel for professionals.
