About Wax Jackets Cleaned

Specialist waxed cotton jacket restoration

Wax Jackets Cleaned is a British service dedicated to the cleaning, re-waxing, repair and restoration of waxed cotton jackets and other garments. The company works with brands such as Barbour, Belstaff, Filson, Driza-Bone, John Partridge and Musto, as well as vintage and modern waxed cotton garments. Its work focuses on returning garments to a clean, wearable and properly reproofed condition, saving customers from having to replace them.

An origin linked to a Barbour jacket "impossible to clean"

The company was founded by Nigel Eastwood following a specific case: in late 2010, a customer came to his dry-cleaning shop in New Mills with a dirty Barbour jacket that smelled bad and could no longer be worn. He had been told it could not be cleaned and that the only option was to replace it. Eastwood, who had been using a specialist wet-cleaning system for about two years, wondered whether that process could be adapted to waxed cotton without damaging the fabric, colour, lining or character of the garment. Since 2010, the company has developed a complete process for cleaning, repairing, re-waxing and extending the life of these garments, and it handles orders from all over the UK and abroad.

Cleaning, re-waxing and repair services

The main service consists of a thorough clean of the inside and outside of the garment before applying wax, with the aim of removing dirt, odours and contamination rather than sealing them in. The company also carries out re-waxing and reproofing, as well as specialist repairs and alterations: cuffs, linings, tears, hems and worn areas, using suitable matching waxed cotton where possible. It also offers mould and odour removal, a service designed for jackets stored in garages, lofts, sheds or damp areas. The work covers jackets, coats, gilets, trousers, hats and accessories.

Wax finishes and send-in process

The company applies wax by hand and offers five different professional finishes, from light options for everyday use to heavier ones for outdoor activities. The send-in process is organised in four steps: the customer completes the online send-in form or downloads the printable version; reads the information sheet and details the work required; packs the garment with empty pockets and their contact details inside, and sends it using a tracked and signed-for service; the company assesses the garment, confirms the cost of repairs after inspection and carries out the agreed cleaning, repairs and re-waxing. Payment is requested when the garment is ready to be returned. For repairs, sending photographs first is recommended where possible, although the final cost is confirmed after inspection.

Pricing and turnaround times

Clean and re-wax pricing starts from £55 for many standard jackets up to and including large size. Longer coats, large sizes, specialist wax finishes, accessories, repairs and postage may be extra. In many cases, the estimated turnaround is up to four weeks, although if the garment only needs cleaning and re-waxing it could be shorter, depending on the current workload. The company does not guarantee that a restored jacket will look brand new; its aim is to leave it clean, wearable and better protected, restoring it as far as possible without damaging the fabric.
