About Oliver Sweeney

Oliver Sweeney, artisan-inspired men's footwear and clothing

Oliver Sweeney is a British menswear brand that designs and produces footwear, clothing and accessories. Its catalogue spans shoes, boots, trainers and slip-ons, as well as garments such as coats and jackets, knitwear, shirts, T-shirts and trousers, alongside accessories including socks, scarves, gloves, hats, bags, cases, wallets, belts and umbrellas. The company also offers an e-gift card and a tool called AI Stylist.

Brand origins and history

The founder, Oliver Sweeney, felt that in the 1970s and 1980s the choice and styling of good quality men's footwear was somewhat limited. After twenty years meticulously learning his trade from the best shoemakers in the industry, in 1989 he set up his own brand, designing and producing shoes and boots in an artisan factory in Italy. Those designs combined traditional craftsmanship with modern styling and materials sourced from renowned tanneries. According to the company itself, that approach gave rise to a new genre of high quality footwear that broke away from the conventional offering of the time. Thirty-five years later, the brand has grown into a comprehensive menswear collection bringing together clothing, footwear and accessories, while maintaining the principles of modern design and quality construction.

Leadership and team

Tim Cooper has led the brand since 2009. He comes from several generations of cobblers and shoemakers and, after graduating in Economics, completed a comprehensive apprenticeship in a factory in France, where he learned the processes involved in footwear manufacturing. His subsequent career has led him to source from some of the world's best suppliers, an experience that has instilled in him the importance of the manufacturing base and of building long-term partnerships.

The creative team works in Kentish Town, London, in an environment shared with photographers, artists, designers, authors and stylists. The company describes it as a small, hard-working and diverse team, with people from different parts of the UK and the world, many of whom have grown within the business. Following the philosophy of its CEO, team members visit factories to see production processes first-hand.

Manufacturing, suppliers and materials

The company views its business as a series of partnerships with customers, suppliers and team. It states that it knows all its factories personally and maintains long-term, trusting relationships with them. It regards its factories, tanneries and mills as an extension of the brand, and selects established, ethical and highly skilled partners. According to its presentation, this way of working brings consistency, flexibility and the ability to develop and innovate. The brand states that it designs for today but with a longevity that ensures garments and footwear can be enjoyed for seasons to come, and it carefully considers how clothing and footwear can be put together to create an effortless style.
