About Computer Waste Recycling
Computer Waste Recycling: IT recycling and certified data destruction in the UK
Computer Waste Recycling (CWR) is a British company dedicated to IT equipment recycling and certified data destruction. It collects unwanted equipment from businesses, schools, councils and homes across the UK, wipes or destroys every trace of data and recycles materials responsibly, providing the documentation to prove it.
The company operates under WEEE regulations and UK GDPR, and holds ISO 27001 and ISO 14001 certifications. According to its own presentation, more than 1,000 organisations — schools, charities, councils, SMEs and national brands — rely on its services.
Equipment it collects and recycles
The company handles virtually any type of IT and office technology. Each item is checked, data is destroyed where necessary and everything is reused or recycled.
- Computers and PCs: from desktop and office tower units to all-in-ones and high-spec workstations. Working ones are refurbished; older or faulty ones are dismantled and their parts and materials (metal, plastic) are recycled.
- Laptops: of any brand and age, including Windows, Apple MacBook and Chromebook. Drives are wiped or shredded, batteries are removed safely and working ones are refurbished.
- Servers and networking equipment: rack, tower and blade servers, as well as complete server rooms. Also switches, hubs, firewalls, patch panels and cabling.
- Monitors, screens, printers and copiers: LCD and LED monitors, televisions, meeting room displays, printers and multifunction copiers. In copiers, internal hard drives that store copies of scanned documents are wiped or destroyed.
- Mobile phones, tablets and phone systems: securely wiped or destroyed, as a factory reset does not completely erase data. They also collect desk phones, PBX units, VoIP handsets and conferencing equipment.
- Routers, access points and other equipment: business routers and wireless access points, wiping configurations and passwords before recycling. Also EPOS tills, UPS units, projectors, keyboards, mice, cables and specialist equipment.
Recycling and data destruction process
The service is structured in five steps covering everything from collection to the delivery of certificates:
- Step 1. Book your collection: the client sends a list of equipment by phone, email or web form and a date and time are agreed.
- Step 2. Secure collection and transport: a DBS-checked team collects the equipment from the client's premises in GPS-tracked vehicles, maintaining the chain of custody to the company's facility.
- Step 3. Audit and inventory: each item is checked, counted and logged by serial number, generating an accurate record of what was received.
- Step 4. Certified data destruction: each drive is wiped with certified software to NIST 800-88 standards or physically shredded, meeting strict business and compliance requirements.
- Step 5. Reporting and certificates: the client receives certificates and full reports for their compliance records.
Data destruction and traceability
Data protection is at the core of the service. Each device is wiped with certified software and drives that cannot be wiped are physically destroyed. The company issues data destruction and erasure certificates, and offers physical shredding for sensitive drives. Each collection includes a Waste Transfer Note, and data destruction certificates and asset-level reports are available for the client's records.
Coverage and locations
Computer Waste Recycling collects IT equipment throughout the UK. Its London and Leicester teams provide secure collection services to businesses, schools, councils and public sector organisations anywhere in the country, at a time that best suits the client. The company also has a presence in Bristol, Peterborough, Cambridge and Birmingham.
Reuse, sustainability and residual value
The company prioritises reuse before recycling: it refurbishes and reuses working devices and recycles the rest in accordance with ISO 14001, helping to reduce electronic waste and landfill. If the equipment retains resale value, the company buys it, and that amount can go towards the next technology upgrade. The service is flexible, with no long-term contracts or hidden fees, and covers both one-off office clearances and regular collections.
Customer reviews
On Trustpilot, the company shows a rating of 4.8 (Excellent) based on reviews that highlight the punctuality of collections, smooth communication, transparency in handling data security and the speed of service. Customers also value that they accept equipment that other companies reject.
