Wingback
Design studio founded in 2014 making metal writing instruments, leather goods, bags, and personalized accessories from its London workshop.
About Wingback
Wingback began in a Bristol garage in 2014 and later moved its studio to London’s OXO Tower. Alasdair MacLaine, an industrial designer and engineer who had worked at Dyson, started with a card holder. That small object grew into three product families: leather goods, metal stationery and accessories, and bags and luggage.
Stationery uses mechanisms and metals as part of the design. Mechanical Pen, Journeyman Pen, Fountain Pen, and Mechanical Pencil represent different ways of writing, with refills and components defined for each model. Brass, stainless steel, and titanium appear alongside finishes such as Oxford Blue, a ceramic-polymer coating revealing the underlying metal when an inscription is engraved.
Wallets, pen sleeves, and refillable notebooks incorporate full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. The brand describes changes through use as part of the material: brass and leather develop marks and patina. The design intent is to retain an object aging with its owner, while writing instruments are replenished through refills.
Bags extend that idea to travel and everyday use. Everyday Pack has a twenty-one-liter capacity, while Rolltop Backpack ranges from twenty to twenty-eight liters. The selection combines technical fabrics, waxed cotton, and titanium hardware. Bags, wallets, and accessories appear alongside desk objects in a catalog connecting what people carry with what they use.
Personalization and corporate or wedding gifts add another line of orders. Sets bring together writing, key-carry, or travel products in one presentation, and custom luggage is also offered. Orders are prepared at the London workshop; support information distinguishes the turnaround for an unpersonalized item from the time needed for engraving or custom work.
The published lifetime guarantee covers material or manufacturing faults through repair or replacement. Normal wear and patina are distinguished from those defects. This distinction sums up Wingback’s character: pieces intended to accompany a long-running routine, with attention to mechanisms, materials, and maintenance rather than depending solely on a changing collection.
