About The Music Development

The Music Development: music school in Liverpool

The Music Development is a music school based in Liverpool, established in 2005, offering one-to-one instrumental tuition and music theory to students of all ages. Its activity focuses on personalised lessons in a friendly environment, with a lesson plan common to all instruments that includes aural skills, technical and scale exercises, sight-reading and study pieces from the start.

Instruments and singing

The school teaches piano, guitar, drums, saxophone, flute, violin, clarinet and singing, among others. In the case of piano, lessons start with beginners with no musical knowledge and progress towards playing with both hands. Saxophone is approached from its jazz tradition and its presence in popular music. Singing lessons are tailored to each student with influences from classical music, jazz, theatre and modern repertoire, beginning with vocal warm-ups and technical exercises. Drums are initially oriented towards rock, expanding to funk, jazz and samba at advanced levels. The flute, due to its size and weight, is presented as an ideal instrument for young musicians, with taster sessions and classical and jazz repertoire. Guitar is adapted to different styles, from classical repertoire to electric.

Music theory and exam preparation

The school offers a weekly music theory class focused on notation and composition, with specialisation in ABRSM grades 1 to 5. According to the centre's information, in most cases students reach grade 5 within a year and the weekly theory class has a 100% pass rate. Sight-reading is worked on as an essential part of musical understanding and also prepares students for school tests and official exams.

Young students and practice

The centre admits students from the age of 3, with an introduction to rhythms and sounds and, in many cases, starting on the chosen instrument. Violins are offered in various sizes, the smallest for 3-year-olds, and guitars in three sizes. Between the ages of 7 and 10, students usually play a simple melody in the first lessons. The school uses a practice diary to encourage a daily habit, with recommendations of 5 to 10 minutes at first and up to an hour a day for those seeking more intensive progress.

Choosing an instrument and performances

For students who are unsure which instrument to choose, the school organises a music session in which options such as piano, drums, trumpet or saxophone are tried out. In addition to tuition, the centre offers opportunities for young musicians to perform.
