Bicycle insurance: cover against theft, damage and liability

Yellow Jersey's bicycle insurance covers theft at home or away from home, accidental damage and vandalism. The policy includes public liability, with a limit of £2,000,000 for insured bicycles. At higher tiers, public liability extends to any bicycle, although limited to the named policyholder.

The company applies a zero depreciation policy: if a bicycle is insured for £3,000, that value is maintained regardless of how long it has been owned. The limit per individual bicycle is £15,000 and the maximum policy value is £50,000.

Cover for accessories and clothing has a limit of £250, with the option to insure additional wheelsets and helmet and kit. Rider protection includes physiotherapy, dental treatment and permanent injuries, with amounts varying according to the tier purchased.

Three levels of cover: Essentials, Performance and Ultimate

Yellow Jersey structures its bicycle insurance into three packages. Essentials is the entry level and protects against theft and accidental damage. Performance is designed for enthusiasts who ride regularly and may travel abroad to train or compete. Ultimate is aimed at cyclists who compete regularly in the UK and abroad in criteriums, triathlons or mountain bike races.

The differences between tiers affect geographical cover, event participation and additional protections. Performance adds cover in Europe for 30 days, cover in transit, participation in sportives and charity events, and roadside assistance. Ultimate extends European cover to 120 days, extends worldwide protection to 120 days, includes competition, event withdrawal with £500 per claim, emergency bicycle hire with £500 and damage to bike boxes up to £1,000.

All tiers include a free DNA+ security marking kit worth £45, a 25% renewal discount, family cover and a multi-bike discount. The excess is 10% with a cap of £100.

Cycle and sports travel insurance

Cycle travel insurance is designed for cyclists and triathletes whose trip is for training, touring or competing abroad. It covers medical expenses, including helicopter rescue, and trip cancellation, with protections that, according to the company, most insurers do not offer.

Sports travel insurance extends cover to non-cycling activities, including extreme sports such as kite surfing, diving or running. It covers medical expenses and trip cancellation with broader acceptance criteria than standard travel policies.

Customer rewards programme

Yellow Jersey offers discounts on equipment, clothing and accessories through its rewards programme. The catalogue shows discounts of up to 40% on Garmin products, among other benefits for the cycling community.

Claims handling and renewals

The company handles all bicycle claims in-house. According to its policy, claiming does not penalise renewal: the base rate is not increased for having claimed and customers who renew receive a 25% discount.

For multiple bicycles, the full premium is paid for the most expensive one and a 60% discount is applied to each additional bicycle. Family cover is standard and protects household members who ride an insured bicycle, provided the security requirements are met.
