About Collingwood

Learner driver insurance for provisional licence holders in the UK

Collingwood offers policies aimed at drivers who have not yet obtained a full licence and are practising with a UK provisional licence. The cover allows you to drive your own car or a family member's or friend's car without affecting the vehicle owner's no-claims bonus, provided the insurer's terms and underwriting criteria are met.

Cover is available in two formats: an annual policy, designed to provide cover throughout the year, and a short-term policy starting from two days with seven-day extensions, useful for intensifying practice before the test. The company states that the advertised starting price was 53p per day for the annual policy and 69p per day for the short-term policy, rates valid according to its website as of 24 August 2026.

What it covers and who it protects

The product is designed for private practice outside lessons with an instructor, in accordance with DVSA regulations for learner drivers. The insurer stresses that this option may be cheaper than adding the learner as an additional driver to the policyholder's policy and that it avoids putting the car owner's no-claims bonus at risk. Those who insure their own vehicle as a learner can start building their own no-claims bonus.

Policy types

  • Annual cover: twelve months' validity, option to add two additional drivers, no-claims bonus accrual and monthly or annual payment.
  • Short-term cover: from two days, with one additional driver and seven-day extensions.

Conditions for the accompanying driver

When practising with these policies, you must be accompanied by a supervisor seated in the front passenger seat. They do not need to be the vehicle owner, but must be at least 21 years old, be qualified to drive the type of vehicle being driven — for example, hold a manual licence if the car is manual — and hold a full UK or European Union licence with a minimum of three years' experience.

Benefits highlighted by the insurer

The company points out that its policies do not include a black box or restricted hours, so practice can take place at any time and in different weather conditions. It also mentions the possibility of accelerating no-claims bonus accrual to reduce the cost of insurance once the full licence is obtained, and the flexibility of practising without depending on an instructor's schedule.

RoadHow app and resources for learners

Annual or short-term cover includes free access to the premium version of RoadHow, an app with DVSA-approved theory lessons and tests, hazard perception exercises, tools to identify areas for improvement and content on the Highway Code. The website also offers a specific guide for parents and guardians of learner drivers and a resource hub with articles on the learning phase.

Other lines of business

In addition to learner driver insurance, Collingwood offers policies for taxi drivers, with annual and short-term cover, and for delivery professionals. The company runs a referral programme with reward cards of up to £50 for each referral in the taxi sector, and its website notes recognition as Best Motor Insurance Provider and Treating Customers Fairly Champion at the 2025 Insurance Choice Awards, according to its own communication.
