History: from watchmaker's workshop to centenary jeweller
The business began in 1919 on South Street (Hull), shortly after the First World War, founded by Jack Segal, a watchmaker by trade. As well as repairing watches, he bought gold and silver for scrap, recovered jewellery pieces, repaired them and put them up for sale. In 1921 the workshop moved to Porter Street, where Jack Segal began selling antiques and silverware alongside watchmaking.
In 1947 Maurice joined the family business after the war and successfully developed the antique and second-hand jewellery side. Faced with the difficulty of sourcing such pieces, more than forty years ago he also began buying new jewellery. In 1963 Maurice was working alone in a small premises at 14 Paragon Arcade. In 1994, thanks to Shirley, Maurice's wife, the business expanded with two additional shops in the same arcade: Segal's Gold Shop at 10 Paragon Arcade, Segal's 2 Silver Shop and the Gift Shop.
In 1995 Mathew, Shirley's son, joined, whose interest in luxury watches and eye for diamonds drove a new dimension of the business. In 1997 Jo, Shirley's daughter, joined and opened a shop in the Freshney Place shopping centre (Grimsby), with a range of gold, silver and gifts. Later, Jo and Jane opened two shops on the upper floor of Princes Quay. In 2003, following the success of the Grimsby store, the business moved to larger premises on Flottergate. Maurice passed away in 2011; Shirley Segal remains actively involved in overseeing the company.
In 2019, in response to customer demand for a larger space, the business moved to larger premises about fifty metres from the previous shop in Paragon Arcade, which became a shop dedicated exclusively to silver. The new shop, on the corner of Chariot Street and Carr Lane, maintains the house style. In 2023, redevelopment plans allowed the Grimsby store to move to a larger premises on Friargate, managed by Laura and with a design and offering reflecting those of the main Hull store.
Today, Segal's Jewellers is run by siblings Jo and Mat. Mat and his wife Jane, together with Jo and her husband Martin, work in the business, and their children are also joining, making the company a fourth-generation family business.
