Smiths Of Harrogate

Smiths Of Harrogate, five generations of furniture and rest in Harrogate

Smiths of Harrogate is a family business founded in 1906 by Frederick Smith and dedicated to the sale of furniture, sofas, beds, carpets and flooring. It began as a small second-hand furniture business and has become, according to its own presentation, one of the largest independent furniture and bed retailers in Yorkshire, remaining in the hands of the Smith family across five generations.

In 1935 the company moved to the former roller-skating pavilion on Dragon Road, an iconic building that has been associated with the firm ever since. Six members of the Smith family are currently involved in the business, with several generations working simultaneously.

Showroom and product selection

The company operates from a 30,000 sq ft showroom in Harrogate, where it represents furniture and bed manufacturers from the UK and Europe. The space is organised into room settings that allow customers to compare styles and products, and the company states that it invests continuously in its renovation.

The catalogue covers several categories:

• Beds: adjustable, ottoman, divan bases, bed frames, headboards, mattresses (including models in stock), protectors and mattress toppers, duvets, pillows and ottoman beds.
• Sofas and chairs: collections of sofas, sofa beds, chairs, recliners and lift and rise recliners, as well as care and maintenance products.
• Furniture: bedroom, dining room, living room and home office, with dining tables, chairs, sideboards, display cabinets, coffee tables and lamp tables, desks, bookcases, wardrobes, mirrors, bar stools and TV bases.

Customer service and delivery

The company highlights the experience of a team with a long history at the firm, who advise on fabrics, comfort levels or choosing tables in a no-pressure environment. The delivery service, carried out by its own staff, includes placing the furniture in the desired location, assembly where necessary and removal of packaging for recycling; it also offers removal of old furniture. The website announces free delivery with two operatives across the UK, with conditions set out on the site, and the company provides after-delivery support.

Additional services and commercial activity

Alongside the sale of furniture, the site includes finance services, a price match policy, returns and withdrawal from contract management, and the option to subscribe to a newsletter. The store also publishes a blog and has a clearance section and seasonal offers, such as the autumn event announced on the page.
