About MiD Mediation
MiD Mediation: family mediation and counselling in Hampton Hill
MiD Mediation is a non-profit organisation based in Hampton Hill (UK) working in the field of family mediation and psychological counselling. It supports people who are separating or divorcing, who are considering it, or who need to review child arrangements made in the past. Its team of mediators is fully qualified and accredited.
Family mediation services
The organisation offers family mediation as an alternative to going to court. Among the issues it addresses are: helping communication with an ex-partner to resolve outstanding matters, negotiating a fair financial settlement — including complex financial situations —, developing a parenting plan suited to children's changing needs, improving communication between separated co-parents, and seeing children separately so that their views are heard. It also provides support to complete financial disclosure and works alongside the client's legal adviser to obtain a financial order.
The service includes assessment for Legal Aid; those who qualify receive mediation free of charge. The organisation also processes mediation applications via a client application form.
Child Inclusive Mediation and MIAM
MiD Mediation offers Child Inclusive Mediation and MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) sessions. It also provides a downloadable financial mediation pack and a model agreement to mediate.
Counselling for adults and children
The organisation provides counselling services for both adults and children. For children, the service is complemented by a child safeguarding policy. Feedback from child counselling clients mentions improvements in confidence, anxiety management and a reduction in aggressive behaviour. Parents highlight progress in communication and their children's emotional wellbeing.
Other family support services
MiD Mediation also offers family support services such as the Family Bridges programme, housing and community mediation, and parent support workshops called Kids Come First. It also provides useful resources and links, and works in coordination with solicitors.
Coverage and how appointments work
The organisation is based in Hampton Hill and can arrange ad hoc appointments at the ETNA Centre in East Twickenham. It serves clients across South West London and Surrey, regularly seeing people from Richmond, Twickenham, Hampton Hill, Hampton, Kew, Teddington, Barnes, Chiswick, Feltham, Hampton Court, Hampton Wick, Fulwell, Hanworth, Kingston, East Molesey, Surbiton, Sunbury, Walton, Esher, Claygate, Hinchley Wood, Thames Ditton, the London Borough of Richmond and the London Borough of Hounslow. Appointments can be face to face at its offices or by video call via Zoom.
Funding and financial support
The organisation notes that family mediation can be covered by Legal Aid. It also states that the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and the Family Mediation Council (FMC) are continuing to offer £500 towards the cost of mediation for separating families with children, to help avoid court battles. MiD Mediation also accepts donations and legacies, and has funders.
Approach and value of mediation
The organisation maintains that family mediation reduces conflict, speeds up the divorce and separation process and helps build a more stable future for families. It states that mediation is less upsetting for children and significantly less expensive than being represented in court. It cites a National Audit Office report to support the fact that family disputes resolved through mediation are cheaper, quicker and, according to academic research, less acrimonious than those settled through the courts. The organisation presents itself as a not-for-profit organisation striving to provide a high quality, affordable service for all its clients.
