About The Alchemy Experiment
The Alchemy Experiment: an inclusive gallery and creative space in Glasgow
The Alchemy Experiment is an inclusive arts venue and gallery, as well as a collective, aiming to create a space for art and creativity in Glasgow. It opened its doors in October 2020 and has since hosted fine art exhibitions spanning painting, photography, printmaking, film, sculpture and textile works, as well as open calls with entrants from all over the world, workshops, spoken word events, solo and group shows, evenings supporting local businesses, live music and pop-up shops for local artists and makers to show and sell their pieces.
A flexible access model for artists
The space is defined by its inclusive character and therefore operates on a flexible booking system. Artists, after applying or being invited, can choose between paying a flat rate upfront as rent or working on a commission basis, so that the space is accessible to artists of all ages, from different backgrounds and with different financial means.
Exhibitions and programming
The gallery maintains a rotation of exhibitions and events. Among the scheduled activities listed on the site are the exhibition Invisible Threads by Phoebe Ryrko and Victoria Snazell; the Wednesday Collage Club with Concrete Nature; New Kids On The Road: An Exhibition by Subcity Radio; the book launch of Things That Fruit in Darkness by Sharon Black; an open mic night titled The Poetry Experiment; and AfroCaledonia, with E. Johnson, P. Morrell and C. Angus.
Alchemy Creative Studios
The project includes Alchemy Creative Studios, a creative studio space presented as new on the site.
Café and screening room
The venue has an in-house café and a screening room, in addition to the gallery and the creative studios.
Accessibility
The main entrance and the main gallery are at street level and are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. The toilets and the lower-floor gallery are not accessible, as they are located downstairs. There are ramps and lifts to facilitate movement between floors, and the gallery is wheelchair accessible. The toilets are accessible and gender-neutral, although they are not on the main level; there are plans to install an accessible toilet on the ground floor. There are disabled parking spaces nearby. The nearest subway station is Hillhead and there are bus stops nearby. The space does not currently have assistive listening devices. All dogs are welcome, including service animals. Descriptive text about the artist and the exhibition on display is provided. Staff are trained to assist visitors with disabilities.
