About Union Technical

Union Technical, energy efficiency installer in Glasgow

Union Technical Services Ltd is a British company founded in 2014 by Owen Coyle and Michael Sweeney, both from the renovation and construction sector. Its activity focuses on energy efficiency solutions for private homes, commercial properties and social housing providers. The company presents itself as a "Whole House" Energy Efficiency contractor, that is, whole-house energy retrofit.

Its management team remains involved in every project: Owen Coyle handles relations with Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) and local authorities, with more than 40 organisations with which he maintains links, as well as negotiating and managing budgets with major energy companies. Michael Sweeney participates from the initial project meetings through to final delivery, oversees funding applications for social housing projects and identifies new products and technologies. Suzanne is responsible for comprehensive support to staff, clients and users, and is in charge of the company's customised CRM system.

Insulation, heating and solar energy services

The company began with simple measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation, and has expanded its catalogue as funding options have evolved. Its current offering includes:

  • Internal wall insulation
  • External wall insulation
  • Underfloor insulation
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Cavity and internal wall insulation
  • Flat roof insulation
  • Loft insulation
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Solar PV
  • Battery storage
  • Electric storage heaters
  • Heating controls
  • Ventilation systems

In the case of solar energy, the company explains that panels generate electricity during daylight hours and that the surplus can be stored in a battery system instead of being exported to the grid. For air source heat pumps, it notes that they are already widely used in Europe and are gaining traction in the UK as an alternative for heating and hot water, with an efficiency rate of around 300% compared to around 94% for a traditional gas boiler.

Funding and grants for energy retrofit

Union Technical offers various funding routes aligned with the UK government's Net Zero targets. For private customers it mentions Help to Buy, and for eligible benefit recipients, fully funded solutions. The company also manages funding applications for social housing projects. Among its published projects is a whole-house retrofit of 25 Hanover Scotland homes in New Scone, lasting seven months and with a budget of £1.3 million, and the start of a £500,000 retrofit on Skye amid a property crisis.

Accreditations and guarantees

The company is MCS registered and offers a 25-year performance guarantee for its bespoke solar solutions, battery storage systems and real-time energy monitoring. It works to the PAS2030:19 standard and holds ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management and 45001 health and safety management certifications. All installations are carried out by its own in-house teams, trained and accredited in industry standards, and each service comes with its own independent manufacturer warranties.

Awards and community activity

The company has received several regional and national awards, most recently the Scottish Large Project of the Year Award for its work with Hanover Scotland. Its team, headquartered in Glasgow, takes part in charity events and has supported Marie Curie, local food banks and Children in Need, among other causes.
