About The Grain Company
The Grain Company: handmade rustic industrial furniture
The Grain Company is a British furniture maker that crafts every piece by hand in its workshop in rural Norfolk. The company works with hardwoods, high-grade softwoods and mild steel, and offers designs that combine functionality and aesthetics within a classic, modern and industrial style.
Manufacturing and customisation process
The company controls the entire production process: from milling the timber, cutting, glueing, sanding and finishing, through to fabricating and powder coating the steel legs. Every piece of furniture is made to order, which allows any piece to be adapted to the customer's needs. For projects that require a special fit, the team can develop the design in CAD and provide a visual representation of the finished result.
The catalogue includes traditional trapezium, reverse trapezium and square loop legs, as well as own designs such as boxpin legs, square steel hairpins and spire legs. The company also sells legs, hardware and finish samples separately.
Materials and finishes
The Grain Company uses top-grade Canadian pine and creates the reclaimed rustic look through its own production process. The wood is obtained from different sources, so each table is unique and the finish may vary slightly. The company specifies that it does not use reclaimed timber: its material is Grade-A, free from contaminants and preservatives, and kiln dried to a low moisture content. According to its presentation, reclaimed timber from old buildings, building sites or used scaffold boards is generally poor quality and has a tendency to bow, warp and crack in the home due to its higher moisture content.
The design seeks a balance between beauty and functionality, with tactile finishes and an aesthetic that the company describes as far removed from mass production. The team selects timber with pronounced grain, knots, burrs and scars to give each piece its own character.
Collections and products
The range is organised into several collections. Tables include extending, round, standard, dining, coffee, side and office models, as well as breakfast bars. The seating section covers benches, dining chairs, high stools and comfortable seating. Beds and bedroom furniture, hallway cabinets, shelves, room dividers and side furniture are also sold.
The catalogue shows products such as the Extra Chunky extending round rustic dining table, the Extra Chunky extending oval rustic dining table, the Extra Chunky rustic side table, the rustic wooden shelf with U shape bracket, the solid oak extending round rustic dining table and the large round rustic dining table. The company also offers garden furniture and a line of adaptable furniture with workshop designs that serve as a starting point for custom modifications.
