Nutscene

Scottish maker of jute and cotton twine for gardening and crafts, with roots in Dundee in 1922.

About Nutscene

A ball of twine seems minor until a plant needs support without a plastic tie. Nutscene has made that object its specialty, producing jute and cotton twine for gardeners and crafters in Angus, Scotland. The company’s industrial history helps explain both its materials and its name.

The story reaches back to Dundee in 1922. Its patented green twine blended into the plants it supported: in other words, it was “not seen.” That phrase became Nutscene. Production later moved to the Forfar area, where the company says it still uses winding machinery from its early years.

The catalog separates thicknesses and two-, three-, four-, and five-ply constructions, with colors ranging from natural fiber to bright hues. Heritage spools dispense from the center, a practical detail that helps prevent tangles while tying stems. Choose the thickness to suit the weight of the plant and the job at hand.

Jute is not confined to the vegetable garden. Nutscene sells twine for crochet, macramé, basketry, and decorative projects, along with raffia, sisal, flax, and some cotton options. A fine string for gift wrapping will not do the work of a stronger tie for a climbing plant; the selection makes sense when read by material and intended use.

In 1999 the company broadened its gifts for gardeners and introduced its well-known Tin of Twine. The current range includes plant labels, seed boxes, gloves, baskets, and gift sets. These are extensions of an identifiable core business, not a replacement for the twine making that gave the brand its start.

Nutscene identifies Kingston Works, Kingston Place, Kingsmuir, near Forfar, Angus DD8 2RG, as its working factory address. It also lists Kingston Place as its corporate address. Online sales and trade inquiries come through the same business, but a factory address does not by itself mean the premises operate as a walk-in shop.

Nutscene’s appeal lies in connecting a practical gardening need with a craft more than a century old. A buyer can choose fiber, color, and strength with the final use in mind. Natural string for tying tomatoes and a bright spool for a craft project are different purchases, organized here within one coherent range.
