The Wave

Inland surfing lake near Bristol with ability-based lessons and sessions, a café-bar, outdoor activities, and The Camp and The Field accommodations.

About The Wave

In Easter Compton near Bristol, The Wave brings surfing to an inland lake. Waves are generated in settings for different abilities, so a session is chosen according to a surfer’s experience and what they want to practice. South Gloucestershire’s rural surroundings and a site with a café, walks, and accommodations extend the visit beyond time on a board.

The Wave Academy organizes learning from first lessons to advanced coaching. Little Rippers is for children ages four to twelve, while Little Improvers provides progression from age six. Beginner lessons include adult-only options, with improver and intermediate levels distinguishing a first experience from a technique session.

Existing surfers can book sessions without a lesson, with beginner, improver, intermediate, advanced, and expert settings. Expert Turns and Expert Barrel distinguish practicing turns from barrel rides. Women-only sessions and adaptive surfing are also offered. Play in the Bay adds another water activity within the site, separate from ability-based surf sessions.

The café-bar serves food from lakeside brunch to evening meals, and the rooftop terrace provides another perspective on the setting. Out of the water, there is a children’s play park, skate ramp, table tennis, volleyball, boules, and garden games. The facilities page states there is no entry fee to enjoy the site beside the waves; activities and accommodations are booked separately.

The Camp offers safari tents near the water, with private and shared options. The Field allows visitors to bring a tent or camper van. They provide two ways to extend a stay, one with prepared accommodations and another with personal camping equipment. Corporate bookings, school trips, university groups, and private parties also incorporate surfing into a shared gathering.

Facilities include changing rooms, showers, wetsuit and board rentals, accessories, and board repairs. Paved paths and level access extend around the lake and pier; there is a terrace elevator, accessible restrooms, and a Changing Places restroom. Assistance dogs are welcome, and a limited number of accessible parking spaces are available near the main building.

The Wave is close to junction 17 of the M5. For a surf session, the venue asks visitors to arrive at the parking lot at least an hour beforehand: the walk to the site is one kilometer, followed by check-in, changing, and a safety briefing. This arrival route is part of organizing the day. Opening dates vary throughout the year, and saunas are offered only in winter.

The combination of abilities, lessons, and outdoor spaces allows a visit to follow different rhythms. A surfer can focus on one wave setting; a family can add games and a meal, while overnight guests can begin another session the next day. The offering brings sport, accommodations, and activities around the same lake while distinguishing site entry from booking each experience.
