Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Wildlife park near Doncaster with animal reserves, keeper talks, experiences, dinosaurs, play areas, and a shopping and hotel resort.

About Yorkshire Wildlife Park

A former riding school and small farm became Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which opened in April 2009 near Doncaster. Visitors walk between large animal enclosures and learn about conservation work. Its fifteen themed areas, play spaces, and dining options make a visit a full day combining observation, learning, and breaks.

Lions have an important place in that history. In February 2010, thirteen animals rescued from a Romanian zoo arrived at the Lion Country enclosure. Further rescues and animal management programs have expanded the park’s work. These arrivals explain why the enclosures are more than settings for watching animals: they are part of an ongoing care history.

The route includes reserves for tigers, leopards, polar bears, cheetahs, and sea lions. Project Polar combines grasslands, pools, and shaded areas; Point Lobos introduces sea lions in a setting with lakes. Boulders Beach adds African penguins, while walk-through reserves offer another way to approach certain species along the designated visitor route.

Keeper talks and shows complement observation with explanations about the animals. Special experiences have their own booking arrangements, separate from general admission. School visits cover different educational levels, while WildLife Foundation, the park’s associated charity, develops conservation projects and supports specialists working with threatened wildlife.

Pangea, opened in 2022, changes the walk’s focus: more than thirty life-size moving dinosaurs create a prehistoric trail. Six indoor and outdoor play areas included in admission allow animal watching to alternate with children’s activities. The combination helps families divide a day among different interests and energy levels.

Next to the entrance, The Yorkshire Hive is a free-entry shopping, dining, and entertainment area. Its stores include artisan products and gifts; Uproar! Play Barn and Planet Putt offer additional activities with their own admission arrangements. Hex Wildlife Hotel provides accommodations in the resort, turning a day trip into a stay with more time to explore the area.

Access to the park and hotel is via Hurst Lane, using postal code DN9 3QY. Free day parking and separate areas accommodate short visits to The Hive, hotel guests, and vehicles displaying an accessibility permit. Strollers and mobility equipment can be reserved; assistance dogs have different access arrangements from pets, which are not admitted to the park.

Tickets, memberships, and experience bookings support different visit plans. The seasonal calendar sets closing and last admission times; some areas begin closing an hour before the end of the day. Yorkshire Wildlife Park encourages an unhurried route through its habitats, time with the keepers, and an experience completed by play, a meal, or a night at the resort.
