Devon Water Plants

Devon Water Plants, aquatic plant nursery with online sales

Devon Water Plants is a nursery based in Dartington, in the English county of Devon, dedicated to the sale of aquatic and pond plants. The company has been selling these species online for over twenty years and delivers throughout the United Kingdom. Its catalogue is organised into categories such as oxygenating plants, marginal and bog plants, and water lilies and floating plants.

Catalogue of plants for ponds and aquariums

The range includes species for garden ponds, aquariums and fish tanks, as well as filtering plants and plants for swimming ponds. Among the varieties listed in the catalogue are hornwort (Ceratophyllum), Japanese horsetail (Equisetum japonicum), dwarf horsetail (Equisetum scirpoides), bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata), purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus), Snowdrift iris, Heather Stream iris, St John's wort, sweet galingale (Cyperus longus), branched bur-reed (Sparganium erectum), marsh cinquefoil, double arrowhead and the red water lily 'Attraction', among others. The catalogue also includes yellow water lilies.

The plants are sent bare root only, so they require planting in a container or directly into a boggy area or silty bottom. The company recommends using aquatic soil, available from most garden centres, and warns that using garden soil or compost can cause the water to turn green quickly. As a new feature, the nursery also offers potted plants for collection only, with information available by phone or message.

Shipping, bulk orders and fish food

Orders are placed through the online shop and there is no minimum order. Shipping has a single charge of £3.95, regardless of the number of plants ordered. The Passion Pellets brand fish food range can be added to the purchase, in floating and sinking pellet format, suitable for cold water fish.

For bulk orders for lakes, filtration systems, swimming ponds or other large-scale projects, the company offers special discounts and handles enquiries by phone or email. The nursery notes that the plants it sells are young and generally small, so they will not look like the images in the catalogue until they mature and multiply.
