Group history

According to the company's own historical account, the group was founded in 1937 by H. Whale under the name Ryland Motors, with its origins in truck sales and bodywork manufacturing. By the 1950s the company was already operating as a limited company and shifted its focus to passenger cars. In 1994, when it was among the largest automotive groups in the United Kingdom, it was incorporated as a public limited company (plc) under the chairmanship of Peter Whale, grandson of the founder.
