About The Macallan

The Macallan, a single malt distillery in Speyside

The Macallan is a single malt whisky distillery established in Scotland, beside the River Spey. The company presents itself as one of the first distillers in Scotland to obtain a legal licence, in 1824, and since then it has built a reputation in the single malt segment. Its activity combines natural raw materials from Spain, North America and Scotland with traditional methods and craftsmanship.

The distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and schoolteacher. The original name of the area was "Maghellan", from the Gaelic "magh", meaning fertile land, and "Ellan", linked to the monk St Fillan, associated with the church that stood on the estate grounds until 1400. Whisky had been made on Speyside farms in the area for centuries before, using surplus barley during the winter months.

Craft and mastery of wood

The company maintains that the quality of its whiskies depends to a great extent on the oak casks in which they mature. The casks are selected, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the supervision of The Macallan Master of Wood and are delivered according to the specifications of the whisky mastery team. According to the company, up to 80% of the final character and flavour of the whisky is determined by the quality of the cask, which makes oak the most relevant factor in guaranteeing the style of the single malt.

The process is described as a journey "from acorn to glass": The Macallan works with fully integrated companies in Spain that identify the oak trees in the forests of northern Spain, fell the trees, saw and air dry the staves before shipping them to the south to complete drying and reduce moisture. The casks are then seasoned for 18 months before travelling to Scotland, where they are filled with the distillery's "new make" spirit.

Natural colour and consistency

All The Macallan whiskies obtain 100% of their colour from the wood in which they mature. Since wood is a natural product, each tree contributes different nuances and colours during maturation. The work of the master whisky makers consists of managing and selecting the casks to maintain the greatest possible consistency between bottlings, within the spectrum of natural colour characteristic of the house.
