Oakums Narrowboats is a British narrowboat manufacturer based in Derbyshire. The company was established in 2019 and, according to its own presentation, has more than 50 Oakums boats on the canal network. Its designs are described as conceived and built in the UK, with purpose-built hulls manufactured by J. Wilson.

Three ranges for different ways of life on board

The new build offering is divided into three distinct ranges, designed for different usage profiles and space preferences:

• Open Bow: 60ft length, with a sociable forward terrace, generous interior and a direct connection with the water. Starting price of £145,000 in diesel version and £175,000 in electric version.
• Closed Bow: 60ft length, with a closed bow that protects the interior year-round and offers more internal space for longer stays and life aboard. Starting price of £160,000 in diesel and £185,000 in electric.
• Bowless: 40ft length, a compact design that uses its length for living space without losing the brand's character. Starting price of £125,000 in diesel and £145,000 in electric.

The new build catalogue starts from £125,000. The company states that prices, specifications and availability must be confirmed in writing.

Customisation on a defined base

Every commission begins with one of the established ranges and is developed around the owner. Layout, materials, storage, equipment and finishes are brought together as one considered design. The company uses marine grade materials throughout the process and offers diesel or electric propulsion options. The design and build process is documented.

Electric propulsion and on-board energy

Oakums approaches electric propulsion as a complete system that integrates motors, batteries, charging and monitoring. It also offers information on solar generation and off-grid cruising configuration, planning energy around the real demands of cruising and life aboard.

Industry recognition

The company has been recognised at the Crick event for three consecutive years. In August 2021, the boat Larkrise won the Favourite Boat in Show award; in 2022, Evenstar won Favourite Narrowboat in Show; and in 2023, Morning Star achieved second place.

Commissioning and handover process

The journey of a commission is structured in four stages: initial consultation on lifestyle, budget, propulsion and timing; design of layout, finishes and specification; build with review of agreed stages; and handover with orientation, documentation and the completed boat. The company also offers used boats and maintains a fleet of previous builds that can be viewed.
