About VHS2DigitalConvert
Tape and memory digitisation from Birmingham
VHS2DigitalConvert is a family-run business based in Birmingham dedicated to converting analogue media into digital files. It accepts postal orders from anywhere in the UK: customers send their tapes, photographs or records and receive them back along with the digital files on USB or via a download link. The company presents itself as a digitisation specialist and makes clear that it is not a printing shop.
What it converts and at what price
The published catalogue covers a wide variety of formats, with per-unit rates:
- VHS: £7.00 per tape, conversion to MP4.
- VHS-C and S-VHS-C: £7.00 per tape, digitisation to MP4.
- Hi-8: £7.00 per tape, conversion to MP4.
- Mini DV: £7.00 per tape, conversion to MP4.
- Audio cassettes: £5.00 per tape, conversion to MP3 or WAV.
- Vinyl LP, 45 and 33 rpm: £4.50 per record, digitisation to audio.
- Printed photographs: £0.25 per photo, high-resolution scanning.
- 35 mm negatives and slides: £0.25 per frame.
- DVD, Mini DVD and VCD: £5.00 per disc, conversion to MP4.
- Mould removal and tape cleaning: £2.00 per tape.
- Video tape repair: £2.00 per tape.
It also offers SSD upgrades and Windows/Mac OS upgrades with technical support, both priced on request. Storage media (CD, USB and similar) are charged separately; if the customer supplies their own, the company is not responsible for any playback failures and recommends using the media it supplies itself. Tape repair work is carried out at the owner's risk.
Working method and output formats
The company insists that it uses only hardware encoders, not cheap USB dongles. According to its explanation, the latter rely on the computer's CPU and cause audio and video to go out of sync, whereas hardware encoders avoid this problem. Videos are delivered as standard MP4 files compatible with computers, smart TVs, phones and tablets; audio from cassettes and vinyl is converted to MP3 or WAV, and photos and negatives are delivered as high-resolution JPEG or TIFF.
Postage, turnaround and coverage
The service operates by post or courier to the Birmingham address and covers the whole of the UK, so there is no need to live near the city. The company returns the originals along with the digital files. The usual turnaround is between 5 and 10 working days from receipt of the media, varying according to the number of tapes, and the company keeps the customer informed throughout the process. It also offers to match or beat any quote presented to it.
