Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels (PPSP Ltd)

PPSP Ltd: solar panel protection against pigeons and other pests

Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels (PPSP Ltd) is a British company specialising in preventing pigeons, jackdaws, squirrels and other animals from nesting under solar panels. Its work combines the installation of physical barriers with the cleaning and maintenance of panels and gutters, and it operates across the UK with a 12-year installation guarantee. The company presents itself as the first choice for resolving this type of problem through a procedure it describes as fail-safe.

The problem: why birds damage solar panels

According to the company, solar panels are attractive to pigeons because they offer warm shelter protected from the weather and predators. That presence has concrete consequences: droppings cover the surface of the panels and reduce their efficiency; their acidic nature can corrode components and cause structural damage; and accumulated dirt and debris can deteriorate the wiring to the point of requiring the installation to be redone. The company also warns that nests and bird activity generate noise and mess, and mentions that droppings can transmit cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis and psittacosis.

Four-step installation procedure

The service is structured as a process the company describes as quick and efficient, with a package that includes gutter and panel cleaning at no extra cost.

• Initial assessment: technicians inspect the situation on arrival and determine the best way to resolve the problem, applying the necessary safety measures before starting.
• Removal of debris: dead pigeons, nests and debris are removed where possible, taking care that no remnants are left and no debris falls from the roof.
• Installation of the barrier: stainless steel mesh or the PanelProof system is measured and fitted to each outer panel, so that pigeons, squirrels and other pests cannot gain access.
• Cleaning and decontamination: panels are thoroughly cleaned using pure water technology and animal debris that can be safely reached is removed, in addition to cleaning and decontaminating the gutters.

The company maintains that, once pests have been removed, they cannot return to the panels.
