About Coaltown Coffee
Coaltown Coffee connects coffee roasting with Ammanford’s industrial memory in southwest Wales. The brand draws on anthracite coal, known as Black Gold, and the loss of mining activity it dates to the last colliery’s closure in 2003. Its roastery gives that name a new use: locally roasted coffee with retail sales, training, and supply to other businesses.
The company’s account identifies 2013 as the start of its journey and 2018 as the start of machinery operation in the roastery. All its coffee is roasted at the Ammanford headquarters, which combines retail, wholesale, and training operations. Black Gold No.3, Candle Light No.1, and Anthracite No.2 continue the industrial reference in core collection names; Jenkin Jones Decaf No.5, The Union No.4, and Drifft Half Caff No.6 broaden the profiles.
Single-origin coffees and seasonal releases accompany house blends. Subscriptions distinguish core coffee, seasonal selections, and pods, alongside three-, six-, or twelve-month gifts. The catalog includes coffee makers, grinders, kettles, scales, and tools from brands such as La Marzocco, Fellow, Hario, AeroPress, Orea, and Wilfa. Brewing guides connect those tools with coffee extraction.
The roastery espresso bar offers coffee beverages and alternatives alongside seasonal cakes. Visitors can buy beans and brewing equipment and collect online orders when ready. The space welcomes dogs, provides indoor and outdoor seating, and has parking and a bike rack. Tables are first come, first served, with no reservation system.
The second location, Espresso Bar No.2 in Pontarddulais, offers coffee, other drinks, seasonal cakes, and retail house coffees and seasonal single origins. Plans resumed in spring 2023 after pandemic disruption. The roastery address is The Roastery, Foundry Road, Ammanford SA18 2LS; Pontarddulais is at Unit 1, 240 St Teilo Street, Pontarddulais, Swansea SA4 8LQ. These are two company locations; the map of businesses serving Coaltown identifies wholesale customers rather than brand branches.
Coaltown Academy holds training at the Ammanford roastery: home brewing, advanced barista skills, milk techniques, latte art, and filter coffee, alongside SCA workshops. The company specifies that it does not run standalone roastery tours; some courses include a short look at the operation. That distinction separates a learning session from general admission to production facilities.
Wholesale services include coffee, equipment, and barista training. The business describes a pursuit of direct trading relationships and sourcing transparency, while stories about producers and customers add context to the beans. For visitors, the offering takes shape as two bars for drinking coffee and a roastery for buying it or learning to brew it, connected by the identity of a town with a mining past.
