About Mobile Tutors
Mobile Tutors: online tutoring for the UK education system
Mobile Tutors is a UK-based online tutoring platform that delivers live teaching via Zoom, integrated into its own learning portal. The company presents itself as an in-house team of qualified teachers, not an agency or marketplace, and structures its offering in four-week blocks with no long-term contracts.
Courses and educational levels
The academic offering covers four levels of the British system:
- 11+ preparation (Years 4 and 5): preparation for the grammar school entrance exam, with timed practice and feedback.
- Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6): solid foundations in maths and English aimed at SATs.
- Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9): preparation for GCSE in five subjects.
- GCSE (Years 10 and 11, and adults): teaching focused on the official exam, with practice papers and mock exams.
Available subjects include Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with a weekly lesson frequency configurable per subject.
Methodology and programme components
Lessons are taught live via private Zoom meetings that students access from the learning platform. They are not pre-recorded: students can ask questions via chat during the session and teachers actively moderate. Recordings are published every evening, so a missed lesson can be caught up later. The programme includes marked homework with mock exams and solutions, as well as access to replays, practice exercises, progress reports and parent notifications. Mock exams are held every eight weeks.
Reported results
The company states that its students outperform the national average: a 96% pass rate, an average improvement of two grades, and 70% of students achieving grades 7-9, compared with a national average of 27%. These figures come from Mobile Tutors' own presentation.
Pricing and contracting model
Starting price is £5 per lesson, with plans from £30 per four-week block and subject. The company notes that typical market rates are £40-£80 per hour for a private home tutor and £15-£25 per session at large tuition centres. Contracting is organised in blocks: 4 weeks at the standard rate, 12 weeks with a 5% discount, 24 weeks with 10% and 52 weeks with 20%, with the price locked until the exam. No weekly payments or single trial lessons are offered; the minimum block is four weeks and there is no long-term contract beyond that period. The company also offers a free introduction session and a free consultation.
Founding team
Mobile Tutors was founded by Varjodh Johal and Jagjoht Johal. Varjodh Johal, co-founder, holds a degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the London School of Economics (LSE) and leads curriculum development and lesson review. Jagjoht Johal, co-founder, holds a degree in Physics from the University of Southampton, has been tutoring for over ten years and has worked with students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in London; he leads tutor recruitment and oversees lesson quality.
Context and proposition
The company justifies its model by the limitations of the British school system: large classes, budget pressures and teacher shortages that hinder personalised attention and consistent feedback. In response, Mobile Tutors proposes small, interactive groups, intentional teacher selection and a structured system with measurable tracking. The company states it has been rated "Excellent" on Trustpilot and has more than 1,500 British families among its clients.
