Access to the hotel is exclusively by the Gornergrat railway. The complex is presented as a car-free environment.

The current resort was planned in 1998 under the values of Hans-Jörg Walther: peace, nature and hospitality at 2,222 metres above sea level. Hans-Jörg Walther, trained at the Lausanne hotel management school, and his wife Claudia, who also comes from a hotelier family, run the property. The resort is part of Sandoz Foundation Hotels, along with Beau-Rivage Palace, Lausanne Palace, Hotel Angleterre, Château d'Ouchy and Hôtel Palafitte.
