About Fregate Island

Fregate Island, a luxury private island in Seychelles

Fregate Island is a 200-hectare private island —an area comparable to that of Monaco— located in Seychelles. It presents itself as an exclusive destination managed by its owners, with access reserved exclusively for island guests. Its offering combines luxury accommodation, environmental conservation and a broad catalogue of land and sea experiences.

The island has seven beaches and only 10% of its surface is developed; the remaining 90% is maintained as conservation land. Tourism operations are managed by Unique Experience Tourism AG, headquartered in Switzerland.

Villas and estates

Accommodation is arranged across 17 Fregate Villas and Estates, with capacities of between 5 and 10 rooms and they include a kitchen. They are designed for couples, families and multi-generational stays, and each unit can be configured according to the guest's preferences.

The architecture and design are inspired by the wings of the frigatebird, with sculptural forms integrated into the landscape. Each villa has a dedicated 24/7 butler and its own buggy for getting around the island. The spaces are flexible and allow for an additional bedroom, a study or a private wellness and fitness room. The villas include separate accommodation for a nanny or other personal staff of the guest.

The Fregate Estates are conceived for multi-generational gatherings or groups of friends, with professional kitchens, dedicated chefs on request and additional accommodation for staff. The island also offers the possibility of a full buyout for group retreats.

Conservation and biodiversity

Fregate is home to one of the most ambitious island restoration projects in the Indian Ocean. Today more than 3,000 Aldabra giant tortoises live freely, compared with the original 150. After 50 years of ecological restoration and species protection, the Fregate Foundation's research and conservation initiatives are framed within a 100-year vision.

More than 40 bird species have been restored, nine of them endemic to Seychelles. The Seychelles Magpie Robin, which was the world's second-rarest bird with only 12 individuals, all on Fregate, was brought back thanks to conservation work on the island; individuals were later donated for reintroduction on neighbouring islands. Fregate's beaches serve as a nesting ground for approximately 1% of the global population of hawksbill turtles, a critically endangered species.

Experiences on the island

The catalogue of land-based activities includes interaction with Aldabra giant tortoises, conservation programmes, nature walks, birdwatching, stargazing, padel and tennis, a multi-functional sports court, cycling, hiking, a museum, a library and boardroom, a virtual reality room and 3D cinema, an art gallery, a conservation centre and boutique, as well as a kids' adventure zone and club with treasure hunts, a water playground and the Young Explorers nature programme.

Marine and nautical activities

In the marine environment, sailing, PADI scuba diving, day and night snorkelling, game fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, sunset cruises and inter-island cruises are offered. The island has coral reefs, a marina and a yacht club.

Dining and wellness

The culinary offering spans fine dining, a beach restaurant and bar, show cooking, a yacht club barbecue, tree house dining, other destination dining experiences, a farm taste and tour, a sunset bar, one of the greatest wine selections in the Indian Ocean and an island-infused rum distillery.

The spa and wellness area includes a full-service spa, private spa suites, yoga and meditation, a state-of-the-art gym, personalised treatment plans, a flotation tank, Watsu, a sleeping pod, a hyperbaric chamber and a snow room.

Reopening and bookings

The island is undergoing a comprehensive process of new construction, infrastructure and environmental enhancement. The relaunch maintains the founding principles of maximum privacy and conservation and incorporates new ultra-luxury experiences. The website indicated that bookings will reopen soon and that the launch is planned for 2026.
