Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, a five-star hotel with three centuries of history in Basel

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is a five-star establishment located at Blumenrain 8, in Basel's Old Town, on the banks of the Rhine. Its history dates back to 1681, when the inn "Drei Könige" (Three Kings) is first mentioned. In 1754, innkeeper Johann Christoph Im Hof placed three wooden king figures on the facade, a distinctive sign that still identifies the building. Personalities such as Empress Michiko of Japan, writer James Joyce and artist Pablo Picasso have passed through its rooms.

Accommodation and dining

The hotel offers rooms and suites. Its culinary offering includes the restaurant Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl, Brasserie Les Trois Rois, Bar Les Trois Rois, The Council (a cigar lounge opened in October 2024) and the restaurant Banks, opened on 12 September 2025 at Blumenrain 2, with a social cuisine concept influenced by European and Asian flavours. It also has a Japanese-inspired wellbeing area called Seijaku, spaces for meetings and events, and the Fleurs des Rois service.

Recognition

The restaurant Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl has maintained three Michelin stars and 19 GaultMillau points across various editions. In 2025, Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois received 3 Keys in the Michelin Guide. Brasserie Les Trois Rois has earned 15 GaultMillau points. Among other awards, the hotel was recognised as the best hotel in Europe at the Grand Prix Villégiature Awards 2019/2020 and as "Hotel of the Year 2020" by GaultMillau.

History and recent transformation

After being acquired in 2004 by the Thomas Straumann family, the building was restored and reopened as Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in March 2006. In 2023, a comprehensive renovation of the main building at Blumenrain 2 began, led by the architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. In June 2025, this transformation was completed, adding seven rooms and suites, the Seijaku wellbeing area, flexible event rooms and the restaurant Banks.
