About Teardrop Hotels

Teardrop Hotels: boutique hotels and tea bungalows in Sri Lanka

Teardrop Hotels is a collection of nine boutique properties located across various parts of Sri Lanka. The company presents itself as an award-winning group of intimate hotels and tea bungalows that combine style and relaxed luxury, with a stated commitment to restoring historic buildings, preserving nature, and celebrating the island's local culture and produce.

The collection of properties

Each property maintains its own identity and is set in a different environment, from tea plantations in the highlands to the coastal front. The collection comprises:

  • Wallawwa (Colombo): an 18-bedroom country house surrounded by 200-year-old tropical gardens, located about 20 minutes from the country's main international airport.
  • Fort Bazaar (Galle Fort): a former merchant's house turned boutique hotel with 18 bedrooms and suites, a spa, and dining options, within the 16th-century Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Kumu Beach (Balapitiya): a boutique spa hotel with 10 bedrooms, just steps from the sea on the southwest coast.
  • Camellia Hills (Dickoya): a 5-bedroom tea bungalow in the central highlands, among tea plantations and the Castlereagh Reservoir.
  • Goatfell (Nuwara Eliya): a 4-bedroom bungalow on a hill among tea bushes, with views over the tea-growing region.
  • Nine Skies (Ella): a restored 5-bedroom tea bungalow with views of the Ella mountain range.
  • Lunuganga (Bentota): Geoffrey Bawa's estate with 10 bedrooms spread across 15 acres of gardens, a swimming pool, and daily guided tours.
  • Kalkudah Beach House (Kalkudah): a beachfront retreat on the east coast, with five bedrooms, a 22-meter pool, and ocean views.
  • Tri (Ahangama): a property on a six-acre hill overlooking Koggala Lake, focused on modern, sustainable luxury.

Experiences, itineraries, and celebrations

The group offers stays tailored to different interests: honeymoons, celebrations, wellness, and family trips. Through its Teardrop Journeys program, it offers island itineraries, including 14-night options such as Honeymoon Getaway, A Sri Lankan Adventure with Teens, Taste of Adventure, and Island Foodie. The experiences are presented as curated to connect with Sri Lanka's culture and environment.

Offers and extended stays

The website lists several promotions available at the time of analysis: discounts of up to 20% for bookings made 90 days or more in advance; 25% off stays of three nights or more; and up to 44% off when booking at multiple hotels in the group. There are also specific offers for extended stays at Kalkudah Beach House and Kumu Beach, a last-minute rate, and a combined itineraries offer.

Projects and news

The collection has added Tri Ahangama, a retreat by Koggala Lake known for its contemporary design and its connection to wellness and nature. No. 5 Lunuganga, known as Ena House, now has a private pool. The group has also begun construction on a new 17-bedroom boutique resort in Kotmale, focused on wellness and with views of the reservoir, scheduled to open in late 2027.

Editorial content and sustainability

Teardrop Hotels maintains a blog, Tales from the Teardrop Isle, with articles on family travel, travel tips, wildlife, sustainability, luxury suites, and destinations such as Ahangama or the east coast. Sustainability appears as one of the group's stated pillars, along with building restoration and cuisine inspired by local produce.
