About Asociación Legado Expo Zaragoza 2008

A new purpose for the Aragón Pavilion

Asociación Legado Expo Zaragoza 2008 aims to manage and find a use for the Aragón Pavilion, a landmark building from Zaragoza's 2008 Expo. Its main proposal is to turn the space into Espacio Aragón, a center promoting tourism, business, and culture across the region of Aragón.

The pavilion

Designed by architects Daniel Olano and Alberto Mendo, the building measures 50 by 50 meters and stands 25 meters tall. It has two floors with 4,300 square meters of usable space, as well as a basement and terrace. Its form recalls traditional Aragonese wicker baskets, with interwoven glass and micro-concrete panels. The Government of Aragón owns the building, which is in the Expo district near the City of Justice, the River Aquarium, and the Convention Center.

The Espacio Aragón proposal

The association proposes using the building in its current condition as a flexible venue for promoting the region. The plan includes:

  • First floor: an open 11-meter-high space for presentations, screenings, and small-format performances.
  • Second floor: offices, food service, and exhibition areas.
  • Upper terrace: adaptable uses based on need.
  • Lower plaza: a covered open-air area for activities.

The association met with the regional government to present the proposal, including a February 14, 2017 meeting with councilor José Luis Soro. The source profile states that the building's interior condition after Expo 2008 was unknown.
