About El Coto de Rioja

Rioja wines from a large estate

El Coto de Rioja is a winery founded in 1970 within the Rioja qualified designation of origin. It describes itself as the designation's largest winegrower and makes red, white, and rosé wines, including crianza, reserva, and gran reserva wines.

Vineyards and winemaking

The company owns more than 800 hectares of vineyards across Rioja's subregions, from Cenicero in Rioja Alta to Finca Carbonera, which it describes as the designation's highest-altitude vineyard. Its estates include Finca las XV and Finca los Cuartos in Cenicero, La Rioja; Finca El Villar and Finca Vieja in Álava; Finca Graciano in Oyón, Álava; Finca los Almendros in Ausejo, La Rioja; and Finca Carbonera in Bergasa, La Rioja.

It grows Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, Maturana, Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. The winery says it built a production facility in the vineyard so grapes can be processed minutes after harvest.
