About Factorías Vulcano
Shipbuilding and Specialties
Factorías Vulcano is a shipyard based in Vigo, Pontevedra, Spain, specializing in the construction of high-value vessels. Its portfolio includes ferries, chemical and oil tankers, 3D seismic vessels, fishing vessels, offshore vessels, cement carriers, oceanographic vessels, and multipurpose vessels. Its pipe division also makes custom steel structures and solutions. The company has completed retrofit work, including the installation of a liquefied-petroleum-gas-powered generator set on Baleària's Abel Matutes ferry in 2016.
History
Founded in 1919 by Enrique Lorenzo and Belgian engineer Ludovico Morlón on Canceleiro Street in Vigo, the company began as a steam-boiler repair shop. Over the years it specialized in building and repairing industrial and marine boilers and moved into shipbuilding in 1940. By 1951 it had its own foundry. In 1977, it added a 161-by-24-meter slipway, enabling it to build vessels of up to 18,000 gross tons. In 1993, it became the first privately owned shipyard to receive ISO 9001 certification from Det Norske Veritas. Since 1951, it has built 223 vessels.
