About Azacan
International Cooperation and Local Action
Azacan is a nonprofit association founded in 1996. It describes itself as nonreligious and nonpartisan and works to challenge and address injustice, including child exploitation, forced labor, hunger, and inequalities between the Global North and South. Its work has six areas: international cooperation projects, public education and awareness, fair and ecological trade, local action, social and alternative economics, and volunteering.
History and Projects
The association began with a group of nine people and has worked in development cooperation, public education, and fair trade since its founding. In 1998, it began working in Honduras, where it created a network of libraries in the municipality of Jutiapa. Since then, it has sent 125,000 books to Honduras, Bolivia, Peru, Côte d’Ivoire, and Spain, and continues collecting books for new destinations.
In 2002, it helped establish the Valladolid Fair Trade Platform with other organizations. In 2003, it opened a fair trade store in Valladolid’s Delicias neighborhood and began providing school support to immigrant children. In 2014, it started a literacy program for immigrant women. It helped establish the Red Delicias network in 2017 and began distributing Ecuadorian Pacari chocolate in Castilla y León in 2018.
