What Enfermeras Invisibles is

Enfermeras Invisibles is a public-education project recovering the stories of nurses whose contributions to science, technology and society were left out of standard histories. It is led by Olga Navarro Martínez and Vanessa Ibáñez del Valle, both nurses with doctorates who teach and conduct research in the University of Valencia's Faculty of Nursing and Podiatry.

Illustrated books form the center of the project, supported by participation in conferences, seminars and courses on the visibility of nursing, entrepreneurship and emerging professional competencies.

Publications

• Enfermeras Invisibles. Inventoras, invencibles, increíbles: a self-published first book funded through Verkami crowdfunding, with biographies of 12 nurses and a tribute to contemporary nurses who led the COVID-19 response; illustrated by Irene Bofill
• Enfermeras invisibles, 2021: a Penguin Random House Plan B edition with 14 biographies and Irene Bofill's illustrations, released in several printings
• Enfermeras Invisibles Iberoamérica y Caribe. Nuevas competencias de las enfermeras del siglo XXI, 2024: a Tirant Humanidades collaboration with nurses from 16 Latin American and Caribbean countries, containing 19 stories and illustrations by Ximena Barrera

Education and recognition

• Conference, seminar and course presentations about nursing visibility and entrepreneurship
• Invitation by the European Specialist Nurses Organisation in 2023 to present the project at the European Parliament
• Pactem Nord's purple distinction for commitment to equal opportunities for women and men in November 2021
• A charitable partnership with Valencia homeless-services nonprofit Casa Caridad, receiving one euro from each self-published book sold
