About Fundem – Fundación Enrique Montoliu

Nature conservation in Valencia

Fundación Enrique Montoliu (Fundem) is a private nonprofit foundation established in Valencia, Spain, in 1996. It works to conserve nature, with a focus on Mediterranean flora and fauna through two main efforts: Mediterranean gardening and responsible land stewardship.

Mediterranean gardening and Jardín de l'Albarda

Fundem promotes the use of native species in landscaping. Its 50,000-square-meter demonstration garden, Jardín de l'Albarda, is in the municipality of Pedreguer, Alicante. Managed according to sustainability principles, the garden serves as an example for creating or restoring public and private gardens. The foundation has also published a book on ecological Mediterranean gardening.

Land stewardship

The foundation purchases and protects ecologically valuable land without official protection, using annual dues from supporting members. Protected sites include locations at El Mas del Peraire, La Vall de Gallinera, the Mijares River valley, Sierra de Bernia, Benimantell, the Almenara marsh, La Casella-Alzira, La Vall de Laguar, Sierra de Espadán, Múgica, Laguna de la Redondilla, Ulloa in Lugo, Peñagolosa, Torrenueva in Ciudad Real, Denia, Las Ubiñas-La Mesa and the Valgrande-Pajares valley in Asturias, Puertomingalvo in Teruel, and Alcubierre in Huesca. Some of these areas are entrusted to environmental groups and partner organizations.
