The school is operated by Fundació “Escoles Ave Maria de Penya-roja,” established in 1944 under the terms of a will by the Coltell-Olmos couple and connected with the parishes of Sant Joan de la Ribera and Sant Tomàs Apòstol. Its founding purposes included schooling children from low-income families in the Peñarrocha area and providing them with a Christian education.
