A tribute to María del Villar Berruezo

Fundación María del Villar Berruezo is a cultural organization established in Tafalla, Navarre, in April 1997. It honors dancer and writer María del Villar Berruezo de Mateo (Tafalla, 1888–San Sebastián, 1977) in her hometown and promotes art, science, and culture in all their forms by supporting research, exhibitions, and the sharing of cultural work and projects.

Programs and publications

Beginning in 1981, some of the foundation's members pursued cultural work through Asociación Luces y Sombras, publishing a literary journal that the foundation continues as a platform for artistic expression and an anthology of contemporary writers.

From its Tafalla headquarters, the foundation holds two annual literary programs open to all writers in Spanish:

  • María del Villar Poetry Contest
  • Luces y Sombras literary journal

It also promotes and organizes cultural events across the region and publishes work in poetry, theater, children's literature, and historical, biographical, and environmental studies.
